AFGHANISTAN has won its first ever Olympic medal after the country’s Taekwondo star Rohullah Nikpai beat his Spanish opponent to take bronze in Beijing.

Nikpai beat Spanish rival and two-time world champion Juan Antonio Ramos 4-1 in the Men’s taekwondo 58kg class on Wednesday, winning joint bronze with Chu Mu-Yen of Chinese Taipei.

The medal catapulted Afghanistan into the medal table for the first time in Olympic history.

Nikpai defeated the 2006 European champion Levent Tuncat of Germany in Round of 16 of the tournament.

He competed in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, and was defeated by eventual silver medalist Nattapong Tewawetchapong of Thailand in Round of 16 of the men's flyweight division.
